Muscle Strain? Chiropractic Can Help

When people think of chiropractic care, they usually picture spinal manipulation to treat misaligned vertebrae, headaches, or neck pain. Not everyone knows that chiropractors also treat pulled muscles. If you’re an athlete struggling with muscular pain, learn more about this injury and how a chiropractor can help.

How to Prevent Pulled Muscles

Although the risk of muscle strain is highest among athletes, everyone should be mindful of daily activities that could cause muscle strain. To prevent injuries in the future, follow these tips:

  • Warm up before exercising or playing sports.
  • Stretch in the morning, after you exercise, and before bed to increase your flexibility.
  • Increase the intensity of your workout routine gradually rather than pushing yourself too hard, too soon.
  • Practice good lifting techniques.
  • Sit and stand with proper posture.
  • Maintain a healthy body weight to avoid stressing your leg and back muscles.

Musculoskeletal Manipulation

One way a chiropractor can help you deal with a strained muscle is through musculoskeletal manipulation. This effective technique lightly manipulates the joints and tissue to reduce the pain of a pulled muscle and release tight muscles, which promotes mobility and expedites your body’s healing process.

Active Release Technique

Another effective strategy for relieving a pulled muscle is to use the active release technique. A chiropractor uses the dynamic release technique by breaking up adhesions that build up due to scar tissue in the muscle. Ultimately, this is a great way to gain more mobility and reduce the painful symptoms of muscle strain.

R.I.C.E

One of the best ways to treat a pulled muscle is through rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Also known as the “R.I.C.E” method, this treatment can help improve the recovery process while also reducing the pain of a muscle strain. A chiropractor can help you develop a detailed regimen to help you overcome a pulled muscle. When you have a musculoskeletal problem, your best bet is to consult the musculoskeletal specialists at Kings Park Chiropractic.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture for Eczema: Does It Help?

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) involving the insertion of fine needles into specific points on the skin. The technique may provide healing benefits for a wide range of health conditions, including eczema.

Eczema is an inflammatory skin condition that causes dry, itchy, and irritated skin. The most common type of eczema, atopic dermatitis, often occurs with asthma, hay fever, and food allergies.

It also has links to mental health conditions, including stress, anxiety, and depression.

In this article, we will examine whether acupuncture is effective at treating eczema. We will also look at eczema acupuncture pressure points and the associated risks and benefits of acupuncture for eczema.

What causes eczema?

From a Chinese medicine perspective, there are a number of causes of eczema. Illness arises as a result of some kind of imbalance in the body. The main causes of these imbalances are stress, improper diet, toxin buildup, and other lifestyle and emotional factors. From a modern perspective, we also have to consider hormone imbalances and infection.

From a Western biomedical perspective, the cause of eczema is unknown. What scientists believe is happening is the immune system reacts to an irritant, allergen or other offending substance, or even a phantom substance. Once the immune system is activated, it fails to shut off when the substance is removed. The immune system then acts on the body itself, in this case the skin.

Regardless of the cause, I use acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine to restore the natural balance of the body. My treatments include long-term planning so that you can maintain your symptom relief through diet and lifestyle after you stop seeing me regularly. Most people continue to come for tune-ups now and again because they feel so great after acupuncture treatments. I encourage seasonal (quarterly visits) and during particularly stressful times as most people have flare-ups during these periods.

Eczema acute

The patient’s body surface can be seen as a combination of papules, blisters, pustules, vesicles, and oozing crusts. It starts as dense punctate erythema and corn-sized papules and papules, which soon turn into small blisters and break down to form a punctate vesicular surface. Itching is unbearable and interferes with sleep.

Subacute eczema

Acute eczema is an extension of acute eczema. There are small papules with a few herpes and blisters, mild vesicles, and a more intense itch. The disease may heal over several weeks or become chronic.

Chronic eczema

The eczema can also be chronic at the onset of subacute eczema. The affected skin is rough, thickened, hard to the touch, mossy, often pigmented, scratch marks, intermittent vesicles, oozing, blood crust and scales, the course of the disease is long, can be extended to several months or years.

  • Damp heat evidence

Eczema is common in acute cases. The papules are red, swollen, vesicular, and itchy, or accompanied by body heat, constipation, short urination, yellow, greasy moss, and string veins.

  • Blood deficiency

Eczema is common in chronic cases. The rash is pale, thickened, flaky, and mossy, with scratch marks, pigmentation, and blood scabs, accompanied by dizziness, pale lips, weak limbs, light tongue, and stringy pulse.

Damp-heat evidence is based on clearing damp-heat, and for heavy dampness, it is supplemented by strengthening the spleen and resolving dampness. Hand Yangming, Foot Taiyin, and Governor’s meridian points are taken as the main points, and needles are used for diarrhea.

For Blood deficiency, nourish the Blood and moisten the dryness, taking the points of the Yangming and Taiyin meridians as the main points and using the tonic method.

Acupuncture

Treatment

Main acupoints: Da Zhi, Bladder meridian line (Da Loom to Bai Wan Yu section).

Companion points: Blood Sea, Feng Shi, and A-Yi points.

The main acupuncture point must be taken, and the supporting points should be added at the discretion of the patient.

In a prone or seated position, the skin needle is used to stimulate the skin from top to bottom, with emphasis on the dorsal and lumbar segments, and the percussion intensity is medium until the skin is flushed. The acupuncture point can be repeatedly tapped within a 2.5 cm diameter area until the skin is flushed. The A-Ye point can be tapped from the outside inwards in the same way as above. Once daily, 5 to 10 times as a course of treatment.

Summary

Acupuncture is a complementary therapy that may balance the energy flow in the body to promote healing, improve health, and boost overall well-being.

The technique may offer many benefits that help treat eczema and related conditions, such as stress, depression, and food allergies. It may also help to lower inflammation, improve sleep, and boost immunity.

Acupuncture treatments provided by an experienced, licensed acupuncturist are safe for most people. Individuals should talk to a doctor before adding acupuncture to their treatment plan.

Car Accident

6 Benefits of Chiropractic Treatment After a Car Accident

If you’re suffering from an auto accident, you might be surprised to learn that chiropractic care can provide a drug-free way to relieve your pain. For instance, if you have back pain or neck pain after being involved in a car accident, this could mean you have a spinal or whiplash injury. If you do not receive proper care, these types of injuries can have a serious, negative impact on your health. They can lead to months, or possibly even years, of chronic pain. Here are five benefits you could potentially receive by visiting a chiropractor after a car accident.

Benefits of post-accident chiropractic treatments

1. Decrease Pain

When you visit a chiropractor, they will perform a full evaluation to identify and treat any health conditions that can benefit from chiropractic. It’s common for people to experience a spine misalignment after a car accident. If this is the case, the chiropractor will perform a gentle, precise adjustment designed to carefully shift your vertebrae back into the correct position. This process will decrease pain, tension, and stress affecting your spine or joints.

Additionally, your chiropractor may also perform massage therapy. This will help reduce the knots in your muscles, ligament sprains, and any nerve issues that can cause pain. Chiropractic care is an effective way to achieve long-term pain relief without pain medications or risky invasive surgeries.

2. Reduce inflammation

Inflammation is a common consequence of physical injury. While some amount of inflammation is normal and indicates your body’s attempts to heal itself, too much can be harmful to your tissues and can cause discomfort. When a chiropractor manipulates your spine to realign the spinal cord, your body may respond by cutting back on its inflammatory cytokine production, which can lower the inflammatory response in your body and reduce pain.

Inflammatory back pain presents in different ways than mechanical back pain. Symptoms of excessive inflammation in the spine include stiffness and pain that increases after periods of inactivity. If your back pain is due to inflammation, you will most likely feel the most pain when you first wake in the morning.

3. Improved Range of Motion

Another common symptom resulting after an auto collision is stiffness in the back and neck. This happens due to misaligned spine joints, scar tissue development, and inflammation. However, chiropractic care can restore and even improve your range of motion by mobilizing and realigning the spine during adjustments.

4. Break Up Scar Tissue

After being injured in a car accident, it’s likely that you have damaged internal tissue. To deal with this damage, your body usually replaces this tissue with scar tissue. While scar tissue serves a purpose, it’s better to have healthy tissue that helps you stay mobile and flexible. If the scar tissue is causing you discomfort, your chiropractor can perform adjustments to break up any scar tissue. This will help your body heal faster and let your injured tissue recover and achieve a healthier state.

5. Decrease the Risk for Further Health Issues

A major benefit of visiting a chiropractor is that they can help reduce your risk for additional health issues or complications. Being injured in a car accident can cause lasting health issues when not addressed as soon as possible. While many people may choose to just get surgery to fix their injuries, this invasive treatment can lead to new health problems and long recovery rates. A natural alternative is chiropractic care, which can reduce the risk for further health risks. Indeed, a chiropractor can help you achieve lasting health without pain or discomfort.

6. Experience non-invasive treatment

Most people want to avoid surgery after a car accident if possible. However, if you wait too long to treat your injuries, surgery could end up being your only option. Chiropractic treatments are non-invasive and align the spine without surgical intervention. If you visit a chiropractor for treatment soon after your injury, you may reduce your chances of requiring surgery in the future.

Chiropractic treatments

If you’re suffering from an auto accident injury–regardless of whether it was a “fender bender” or a major crash–don’t wait to deal with your pain. Prompt chiropractic care will help support your body’s natural healing process and help you avoid a lifetime of chronic pain or other health problems.

Insomnia

Rest easy: Sleeping Better Thanks to Chiropractic Care

Insomnia can take a terrible toll on the body. People who suffer from insomnia may experience changes in behavior and mood. Insomnia can also make people feel irritable and depressed, and it can make concentrating and remembering things difficult.

Over the long term, lack of sleep can have a negative impact on the immune system and can lead to poor health. If you suffer from insomnia, you probably spend a lot of time overly tired and frustrated.

Chiropractic care can help. Understanding insomnia, the benefits of chiropractic care, and how chiropractic adjustments can be used to treat your insomnia can help you decide whether chiropractic adjustments are right for you. Here’s what you need to know.

Why Is Sleep So Important?

Sleep affects just about every part of our life. Consider the following reasons that sleeping well at night is an absolute necessity:

  • Emotional well-being – While you sleep, your brain is working out what it needs to for the next day. Without a good night’s rest, you may be more likely to struggle with depression, mood swings, stress, or a lack of motivation.
  • Cognitive function -Research reveals that a well-rested brain can learn faster and is better at problem-solving. It helps memory as well as the ability to make good decisions.
  • Physical well-being – A lack of sleep can lead to heart disease, stroke, obesity, higher blood sugar levels, inhibited growth and development, and lead to reduced immune system function.
  • Safety – Studies show that driving drowsy can be just as dangerous as driving drunk. Being sleepy can affect your performance on the job or at school and lead to risk-taking or mistakes that could be dangerous in some situations.

Yes, sleep is vital to life! So let’s consider the way that brain function, specifically brainstem function, affects sleep. This will help us to discover a natural way to cope with insomnia.

Why Does Insomnia Happen?

The first way a chiropractor can help you address insomnia is by getting to the root cause of your sleep issues. Ultimately, it is always better if we can eradicate the root cause of insomnia so that your body can sleep naturally. This is much better than simply covering up the issue on the surface.

There are several reasons why you might develop insomnia. Some of the most common issues include:

  • You are suffering from chronic pain, making it impossible to relax
  • Your sleep environment needs to be improved
  • You have a lot of tension in your muscles, making it hard to fall asleep at night

After identifying the root cause of insomnia, it is possible to develop a firm treatment plan.

How Can a Chiropractor Address These Issues?

There are several ways that a chiropractor can help with all of these problems. Some of the ways include:

  • Help Alleviate Stress: A chiropractor can help you alleviate stress. Stress is bad for your body and it can make it hard to fall asleep at night. For example, chiropractors can help patients learn how to perform exercises that can help them alleviate their anxieties and relax their minds.
  • Treat Chronic Pain: If you are dealing with chronic pain, this goes down from old injuries, overuse injuries, and nerve issues. A chiropractor is able to help you address all of these problems. Using chiropractic adjustments, it might be possible to treat your pain naturally. That way, you have an easier time falling asleep.
  • Recommend Lifestyle Changes: Finally, a chiropractor can also take a look at your sleep environment and recommend lifestyle changes that might make it easier for you to fall asleep. For example, the temperature in your room might need to be adjusted. Or, based on the alignment of your back, the chiropractor might be able to recommend a different mattress for you.

Chiropractic adjustments should be able to aid in the reduction of medication use by our practice members. Doing so will allow the individual to say goodbye to unwanted side effects and enjoy the peaceful sleep they deserve.

What Else Can I Do to Help Me Sleep Better?

In addition to seeing a chiropractor, you can also address your lack of slumber in a variety of ways. You can:

  • Try changing your sleeping position to one that promotes a more restful night
  • Evaluate your current sleep routine and look for areas to improve your sleep hygiene
  • If your budget allows, purchasing a new mattress or chiropractic pillow may also help you settle into a more rewarding nighttime routine
  • Seek out mattresses that are specifically made to help back pain and shoulder pain
  • Increase exercise to help you sleep better and reduce overall body pain

These are just a few of the ways that a chiropractor can help you address some of the root causes of insomnia. Therefore, if you are having trouble falling asleep at night, what should you do?
