5 Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy
For expecting mothers, being pregnant and giving birth to a child is an amazing journey. It can be a journey of profound personal growth, some degree of stress, and may contain a few fearful moments for the health and safety of the mother and child.
Many woman opt to utilize chiropractic care to optimize their health during this critical time, and to ensure that the birthing process is as comfortable and complication-free as possible. Chiropractic care is a significant advantage for many pregnant women as well as their unborn child.
PREGNANCY TIP #1: DON’T STOP EXERCISING
Back in the day, doctors used to advise pregnant women to rest throughout the entire gestational period. Now, however, new research points to the benefits of exercising throughout all stages of pregnancy. Performing cardiovascular exercise, lifting light weights, and stretching are all excellent ways that new mothers can ease discomfort during pregnancy. Furthermore, continuing to exercise throughout pregnancy can often lead to an easier delivery.
You don’t have to perform incredibly high-intensity moves during your pregnancy, but you should definitely be sure to, at the bare minimum, get a light walk in every day.
PREGNANCY TIP #2: EMBRACE THE WEIGHT GAIN
In general, gaining weight is not good for our health. However, when one is pregnant, it’s vitally important to gain weight so that the baby can effectively grow. In fact, many sources recommend that pregnant women gain between 25 and 35 pounds during pregnancy.
If you’ve been careful to not gain weight your whole life, this change may feel like a bit of a shock for you. But just know: this weight gain is temporary, and is absolutely necessary for a healthy pregnancy. You’ll be able to lose the weight again quickly once you’ve birthed the baby.
PREGNANCY TIP #3: PREPARE FOR SWELLING
Many women will experience swollen feet and other areas during pregnancy. This is a normal phenomenon, and one that may not be able to be avoided. Most women should assume that they will experience some foot swelling during pregnancy and should plan accordingly. This means wearing comfortable, breathable shoes that can accommodate different foot sizes at different periods of the day.
Your comfort is incredibly important during pregnancy. The better you feel, the better your baby will feel!
PREGNANCY TIP #4: DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP
While we mentioned in an earlier point the importance of exercise during pregnancy, this should not be taken to the extreme. If you need to lift something extremely heavy, you should wait for help. Pushing yourself too hard can cause pregnancy complications and could also lead to orthopedic problems.
Because of the various circulating hormones during pregnancy (and other factors), your joints will likely be more lax than they typically are. This can result in injury, especially if you are attempting to lift more weight than you should.
PREGNANCY TIP #5: SCHEDULE YOUR CHIROPRACTOR APPOINTMENT
Your pregnancy chiropractor is here to help.
Receiving regular chiropractic manipulations throughout your pregnancy will ensure that your spine is in optimal alignment. Because your spine is involved with every process in your body, it’s obviously integral to your pregnancy as well. Make sure that you take care of this area by seeing your chiropractor throughout all phases of your pregnancy.
If you’re concerned about receiving this type of treatment during pregnancy, never fear! Chiropractors adjust the pressure and angle when dealing with every patient. There is no “one-size-fits-all” manipulation. Rather, each treatment is tailored to your own unique needs.
