Understanding Your Pain

What Is Neck Pain?

Neck pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints in Australia, affecting an estimated 1 in 3 Australians at some point in their life. The cervical spine — the seven vertebrae running from the base of your skull to your upper back — is one of the most mobile and load-bearing structures in the body, making it particularly vulnerable to strain, injury, and degeneration.

Neck pain ranges from acute episodes lasting a few days to chronic conditions persisting for months or years. The cause matters enormously — a muscle strain, a disc bulge, and a facet joint problem all feel different and respond to different treatment approaches.

At Kings Park Chiropractic, Dr. Brian Sin (M.Chiro, Grad Dip Chiro, DACCP) conducts a thorough assessment before any treatment begins to identify the specific structure causing your pain.

Symptoms

Do You Recognise These Signs?

Neck pain presents differently depending on the underlying cause. Here are the most common symptoms we see at Kings Park Chiropractic.

Morning stiffness Neck feels locked or tight on waking, easing as the day progresses
Sharp turning pain Pain when rotating the head left or right, checking blind spots
Arm numbness Tingling or pins and needles into the shoulder, arm, or hand
Cervicogenic headache Headaches that begin at the base of the skull and radiate forward
Desk & screen pain Aches that build throughout the day and worsen with prolonged sitting
Muscle spasm Tight, knotted muscles on one or both sides of the neck and upper back
⚠️ Seek urgent care if neck pain follows a traumatic injury, is accompanied by severe arm weakness, loss of hand coordination, or difficulty walking.
Causes

What’s Causing Your Neck Pain?

Neck pain rarely has a single cause. The cervical spine is under constant load — poor posture, sedentary work, old injuries, and age-related changes all contribute. Here are the most common causes we assess and treat.

1
Poor Posture & Text Neck Forward head posture from screens and desk work adds up to 27kg of extra load on the cervical spine for every 2.5cm the head shifts forward.
2
Whiplash Rapid acceleration-deceleration injuries from car accidents or contact sport that strain the ligaments, muscles, and joints of the cervical spine.
3
Cervical Disc Bulge A bulging disc in the neck can compress nearby nerve roots, causing pain, numbness, or weakness into the arm and hand.
4
Facet Joint Irritation Stiff or inflamed joints between the vertebrae causing localised neck pain, often with a catching or locking sensation on movement.
5
Pinched Nerve Cervical radiculopathy — compression of a nerve root in the neck — causing radiating pain, tingling, or weakness down one arm.
6
Cervical Spondylosis Age-related degeneration of the discs and vertebrae causing chronic stiffness and aching — particularly common from the 40s onwards.
7
Muscle Strain Overuse, awkward sleeping positions, or sudden movements that overload the muscles and soft tissues of the neck.
8
Stress & Tension Psychological stress causes habitual muscle guarding in the neck and shoulders — a common but often overlooked contributor to chronic neck pain.
Our Approach

How Chiropractic Helps Neck Pain

Chiropractic care for neck pain focuses on restoring normal movement to the cervical joints, reducing nerve irritation, and releasing the surrounding muscle tension — addressing the cause rather than masking the pain.

1
Cervical Spinal Adjustment Precise, controlled movements restore mobility to stiff cervical joints, reduce nerve irritation, and allow surrounding muscles to relax.
2
Dry Needling Targets trigger points in the deep neck and upper trapezius muscles that contribute to chronic pain, stiffness, and referred headache patterns.
3
Soft Tissue Therapy Hands-on mobilisation of the muscles and fascia around the cervical spine to reduce spasm and restore range of motion.
4
Postural Rehabilitation Targeted exercises, ergonomic advice, and movement coaching to correct the postural habits driving your pain and prevent recurrence.
A 2017 Cochrane Review on manual therapy for neck pain found that spinal manipulation and mobilisation produced clinically meaningful improvements in pain and function. A separate study in JMPT (2018) found that spinal manipulative therapy combined with supervised exercise reduced neck pain significantly more than medication alone at both short and long-term follow-up.

Safety & Evidence

Is Chiropractic Neck Adjustment Safe?

This is one of the most common questions patients ask — and it deserves a direct, honest answer. Chiropractic cervical adjustment is safe when performed by a qualified practitioner following a thorough assessment. Serious adverse events are rare.

At Kings Park Chiropractic, Dr. Brian Sin (M.Chiro, Grad Dip Chiro, DACCP) conducts a full health history and physical assessment before any neck treatment begins. Contraindications — including vascular risk factors, recent trauma, and bone pathology — are screened for systematically. Dr. Brian holds a Master of Chiropractic from Macquarie University and a postgraduate Diplomate in Chiropractic Paediatrics, and is registered with AHPRA.

The technique, force, and direction of any adjustment is always adapted to your individual presentation.

What does a neck adjustment involve? A cervical adjustment is a precise, controlled movement applied to a specific joint in the neck to restore normal motion. Most patients describe a feeling of release and immediate improvement in mobility. It is not a forceful or random manipulation.
Who should not have a cervical adjustment? Patients with certain vascular conditions, severe osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis of the upper cervical spine, or recent fractures require a modified approach or referral. This is why the assessment comes first — every time.
What if I’m nervous about neck cracking? That’s completely normal. Cervical adjustment is always optional — Dr. Brian uses mobilisation, soft tissue therapy, and dry needling as effective alternatives if you prefer a no-manipulation approach. Just let us know at your first visit.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my neck pain needs a chiropractor?+
If your neck pain has lasted more than a few days, is limiting your movement, causing headaches, or sending pain into your shoulder or arm, it’s worth a proper assessment. Early treatment generally produces better and faster results than waiting.
How many sessions will I need for neck pain?+
Acute neck pain from a strain or minor injury often responds in 3–6 visits. Chronic pain, disc-related issues, or whiplash may require a longer care plan. Dr. Brian will give you a realistic timeframe after your first assessment — no vague open-ended commitments.
Can a chiropractor help a pinched nerve in the neck?+
Yes. Cervical radiculopathy — a pinched or compressed nerve root in the neck — responds well to chiropractic care in many cases. Treatment aims to reduce the compression through spinal adjustment and mobilisation, relieve surrounding muscle tension with dry needling, and restore normal nerve function. Severe or progressive cases may require imaging or co-management with a specialist.
What is the difference between a chiropractor and physio for neck pain?+
Both professions treat neck pain effectively. Chiropractors focus on the diagnosis and treatment of spinal joint dysfunction — spinal adjustment is a core tool. Physiotherapists tend to emphasise exercise rehabilitation and may use manual therapy as a secondary tool. For joint-related neck pain with restricted movement, chiropractic often produces faster initial relief. For long-term rehabilitation after injury, both approaches have value. Many patients benefit from both.
Is chiropractic neck adjustment safe?+
Yes, when performed by a qualified practitioner following a thorough assessment. Serious adverse events are rare. At Kings Park Chiropractic, Dr. Brian screens for all contraindications before treatment and always adapts his approach to your individual health history. If you prefer not to have a neck adjustment, effective alternatives — mobilisation, dry needling, and soft tissue therapy — are available.
Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor for neck pain?+
No referral is needed to book directly. If you are attending under a Medicare EPC plan, Workers’ Compensation (SIRA), CTP, or DVA, a referral will be required — call us and we can guide you through the process.
