Myth: “Chiropractic Is Dangerous and Will Give You a Stroke”
A common fear, addressed honestly — with a link to the full research breakdown.
Of all the concerns people raise about chiropractic care, the stroke question is the one we take most seriously. It’s a reasonable thing to want clarity on before your first adjustment. Below, Dr. Brian Sin (M.Chiro, Grad Dip Chiro, DACCP) gives you a short, honest answer to this myth. For the full research breakdown — including how the evidence has been studied and what it actually shows — see our dedicated “Is Chiropractic Safe?” page.
This page is part of our Evidence & Safety Hub.
Is it true that chiropractic adjustments cause strokes?
This myth usually refers to cervical artery dissection — a tear in an artery wall in the neck that can lead to a stroke. It’s an extremely rare condition, and research has not established that neck adjustments cause it.
This is sometimes called “reverse causation” — the early symptoms of the dissection (headache, neck pain) are what bring the person in for care in the first place.
So is there truly zero risk?
We won’t claim “zero risk” — no medical or healthcare intervention is risk-free, and we think honest framing matters more than reassurance. What the evidence does show is that the widely-feared causal link between neck adjustments and stroke is not well supported, and that major adverse events from spinal manipulation overall are rare.
Our full “Is Chiropractic Safe?” page covers the adverse event rates from recent systematic reviews in more detail, including how we screen for risk factors before any adjustment.
How does Kings Park Chiropractic manage this risk?
Before any adjustment, Dr. Brian takes a thorough case history and screens for vascular risk factors and red flags — including unexplained neurological symptoms, sudden severe headache, recent trauma, osteoporosis, and known vascular conditions. If anything of concern comes up, treatment is adapted or you may be referred for further assessment before any manipulation is performed.
Technique is also adapted to the individual. Where a more cautious approach is appropriate, Dr. Brian can use instrument-assisted or soft-tissue techniques instead of manual high-velocity manipulation. Anyone who prefers to avoid high-velocity techniques can discuss alternatives at their initial consultation.
What should I tell Dr. Brian before my first adjustment?
Let him know about any history of stroke or TIA (mini-stroke), blood thinning medication, osteoporosis, recent neck trauma or surgery, unexplained dizziness, or pregnancy. This informed-consent conversation is a normal part of every new patient assessment and helps tailor your care safely.
Why does this myth persist if the evidence doesn’t support it?
Cervical artery dissection is genuinely frightening, and because some patients happen to be seeing a chiropractor for neck pain or headache around the time of a stroke, an association can look like causation even when the research doesn’t support it. Media coverage of individual cases can also amplify the perception of risk well beyond what large-scale studies show. We think the honest response is to take the concern seriously, explain what the research actually says, and be transparent about our screening process — not to dismiss the question.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a chiropractic neck adjustment cause a stroke?
Research has not established that chiropractic neck adjustments cause stroke. A systematic review found no evidence of causation between chiropractic care and cervical artery dissection, the condition most often linked to this concern. See our “Is Chiropractic Safe?” page for the full research breakdown.
How common are serious complications from chiropractic care?
Serious adverse events from spinal manipulation are rare. Minor, transient effects like soreness or stiffness are more common and typically resolve within a day or two.
Will Dr. Brian check if I’m at risk before adjusting my neck?
Yes. Every new patient undergoes a case history and screening for vascular risk factors and red-flag symptoms before any adjustment, including of the neck. Where high-velocity manipulation is not appropriate, instrument-assisted or soft-tissue alternatives are available.
Is chiropractic safe for people with a history of stroke or TIA?
This needs individual assessment. Tell Dr. Brian about any history of stroke, TIA, blood thinning medication, or vascular conditions during your initial consultation so your care can be tailored appropriately.
