Myth: “You Need a Referral to See a Chiropractor”

In Australia, you can book directly — here’s when a referral actually matters.

One of the most common things new patients tell us is that they assumed they needed to see their GP first before booking a chiropractor. In Australia, that’s not the case. Chiropractors are primary contact healthcare practitioners, meaning you can book an appointment directly — no referral required. The one exception is if you want to claim a Medicare rebate under a specific GP-managed plan, which we’ll explain below.

This page is part of our Evidence & Safety Hub.

Do I need a GP referral to see a chiropractor in Australia?

No. Chiropractors are registered primary contact practitioners under AHPRA, the same regulatory framework that covers GPs, physiotherapists, and dentists. This means you can book directly with Dr. Brian at Kings Park Chiropractic without first visiting your GP — for back pain, neck pain, headaches, or any other concern within his scope of practice.

So when does a referral actually come into play?

A referral becomes relevant only if you want to claim a Medicare rebate under a GP Management Plan, known as a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan — sometimes still referred to by its older name, the Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan. This is a specific arrangement your GP sets up for patients with chronic or complex conditions, and it allows for a Medicare-subsidised rebate towards allied health visits, including chiropractic.

Under a GP Management Plan, eligible patients can access Medicare rebates for up to 5 allied health visits per calendar year. If you don’t have one of these plans, you can still see Dr. Brian directly — you simply won’t have a Medicare rebate for that visit.

What if I have private health insurance instead?

Private health extras cover for chiropractic is separate from Medicare and doesn’t require any referral at all. If your fund covers chiropractic, you can claim on the spot using HICAPS, which Kings Park Chiropractic has on-site. Many of our patients use their extras cover this way, visit after visit, with no GP involvement.

What about work injury or sports injury claims?

Work injury treatment under WorkCover and certain sports injury claims may have their own documentation requirements depending on your insurer or employer, which can sometimes involve a referral or treatment plan. If you’re coming in for a work-related or insurance-related injury, mention this when booking so we can guide you through what paperwork, if any, is needed for your specific claim.

What’s the easiest way to get started?

If you don’t have a chronic condition requiring a GP Management Plan, the simplest path is to book directly with Dr. Brian — online or by phone. He’ll take a full case history at your first visit and can advise whether a referral pathway would benefit you going forward, for example if you have a complex or long-standing condition that might suit a GP Management Plan.

Quick Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I book a chiropractor without seeing my GP first?

Yes. Chiropractors in Australia are primary contact practitioners, so you can book directly with Kings Park Chiropractic without a GP referral.

Do I need a referral to claim Medicare for chiropractic?

Only if you’re claiming under a GP Chronic Disease Management (formerly EPC) plan, which provides Medicare rebates for up to 5 allied health visits per year for eligible chronic conditions. Without this plan, you can still see a chiropractor directly, just without a Medicare rebate.

Does private health insurance require a referral for chiropractic?

No. Private health extras cover for chiropractic doesn’t require a referral. Kings Park Chiropractic has HICAPS on-site for instant claiming if your fund covers chiropractic.

What should I bring to my first appointment if I don’t have a referral?

Just yourself, any relevant scan results or medical history if you have them, and your private health or Medicare card if applicable. No referral letter is needed unless you’re using a GP Chronic Disease Management plan.
