Understanding Your Pain

What Is Shoulder Pain?

This page is for you if you live in Kings Park, Blacktown, or the surrounding suburbs and are dealing with shoulder pain, restricted arm movement, or aching that travels down your arm — and you want to understand what’s causing it before deciding on treatment.

Shoulder pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints seen in Australian healthcare, affecting approximately 1 in 5 adults at any given time. The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body — a complex arrangement of four joints, four rotator cuff muscles, multiple bursae, and the shoulder blade — which makes it vulnerable to injury, overuse, and postural strain.

Pain can arise from the joint itself, the surrounding tendons and bursae, the rotator cuff muscles, the acromioclavicular (AC) joint, or even from a pinched nerve in the cervical spine referring pain down the arm. Identifying the correct source is the critical first step — treatment that misses the cause simply won’t work.

At Kings Park Chiropractic, Dr. Brian Sin (M.Chiro, Grad Dip Chiro, DACCP) performs a structured shoulder assessment — including orthopaedic tests, range of motion, and cervical screening — before any treatment begins.

Symptoms

Do You Recognise These Signs?

Shoulder pain presents differently depending on which structure is involved. These are the most common symptoms we see at Kings Park Chiropractic.

Pain lifting the arm Pain or weakness when raising the arm overhead or out to the side
Night pain Pain that wakes you at night, especially when lying on the affected shoulder
Clicking or catching Audible or felt clicking, catching, or grinding within the joint on movement
Arm pain & tingling Aching, numbness, or pins and needles that travel down into the arm or hand
Stiffness & loss of range Difficulty reaching behind the back, across the body, or above shoulder height
Weakness with tasks Reduced strength when pushing, pulling, or carrying — everyday tasks become difficult
⚠️ Seek urgent care if shoulder pain follows a traumatic fall or impact, if you cannot move the arm at all, or if you have severe swelling with bruising — these may indicate a fracture or full rotator cuff tear requiring imaging.
Causes

What’s Causing Your Shoulder Pain?

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body — that mobility comes at the cost of stability. Overuse, poor posture, sport, and age-related changes all contribute. Here are the most common causes we assess and treat at Kings Park Chiropractic.

1
Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy Overuse or degeneration of one or more rotator cuff tendons — the most common cause of shoulder pain in adults over 40, causing aching with overhead activity and lifting.
2
Shoulder Impingement Syndrome Compression of the rotator cuff tendons and bursa in the subacromial space, causing a painful arc of movement — typically between 60–120° of arm elevation.
3
Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis) Progressive stiffening and pain from capsular inflammation — movement becomes severely restricted in all directions. More common in women, diabetics, and those aged 40–60.
4
AC Joint Sprain or Arthritis Pain at the top of the shoulder where the collarbone meets the shoulder blade — commonly from a fall on the outstretched hand or shoulder, or from age-related joint wear.
5
Bursitis Inflammation of the subacromial bursa causing sharp pain on lifting and lying on the shoulder — often accompanies rotator cuff tendinopathy.
6
Cervical Referred Pain A pinched nerve or disc bulge in the neck can refer pain, aching, or tingling into the shoulder and down the arm — often mistaken for a shoulder problem when the source is the cervical spine.
7
Rotator Cuff Tear Partial or full-thickness tears of the cuff tendons — causing significant weakness. Partial tears often respond well to conservative care; full tears may require surgical assessment.
8
Postural Overload Rounded shoulders and forward head posture from prolonged desk or screen work alter shoulder mechanics — loading the rotator cuff unevenly and driving impingement over time. See our posture correction page for more.
Our Approach

How Chiropractic Helps Shoulder Pain

Chiropractic care for shoulder pain targets the underlying mechanical cause — whether that’s restricted joint movement, muscle imbalance, poor scapular control, or referred pain from the neck. The goal is to restore normal shoulder mechanics, reduce pain, and strengthen the structures that stabilise the joint long term.

1
Shoulder & Thoracic Joint Mobilisation Targeted mobilisation of the glenohumeral, acromioclavicular, and thoracic joints to restore range of motion, reduce impingement, and take abnormal load off the rotator cuff.
2
Dry Needling Releases trigger points in the rotator cuff, deltoid, and trapezius muscles that contribute to pain, restricted movement, and referred aching into the arm.
3
Cervical Assessment & Treatment Where the neck is contributing to shoulder symptoms, cervical adjustment or mobilisation addresses the root source — a step many shoulder-focused treatments miss entirely.
4
Scapular Rehabilitation & Postural Correction Targeted exercises to restore normal scapular movement, strengthen the rotator cuff, and correct the postural patterns driving recurring shoulder pain.
A 2012 systematic review in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy found that manual therapy combined with exercise produced significant improvements in pain and function for shoulder impingement syndrome. A 2018 study in Musculoskeletal Science & Practice demonstrated that thoracic spinal manipulation significantly improved shoulder range of motion and reduced pain in patients with subacromial impingement. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare identifies musculoskeletal conditions — including shoulder disorders — as among the most common causes of disability and healthcare use in Australia, affecting an estimated 1 in 3 Australians at any point in time.

Safety & Evidence

Is Chiropractic Safe for Shoulder Pain?

Chiropractic treatment for shoulder pain is safe and appropriate for the vast majority of presentations. The shoulder is assessed carefully before any hands-on treatment begins — and where the source is the neck rather than the shoulder itself, that distinction is made first.

At Kings Park Chiropractic, Dr. Brian Sin (M.Chiro, Grad Dip Chiro, DACCP) performs a structured orthopaedic and neurological assessment at the first visit. Presentations that require imaging — suspected full-thickness rotator cuff tears, fractures, or significant instability — are identified and referred appropriately. Dr. Brian is registered with AHPRA and holds a Master of Chiropractic from Macquarie University.

Treatment is always adapted to the individual — there is no one-size-fits-all approach to shoulder care.

Can a chiropractor treat a rotator cuff injury? Yes — partial rotator cuff tears and tendinopathy respond well to conservative care including joint mobilisation, dry needling, and rehabilitation exercises. Full-thickness tears with significant weakness require specialist assessment and are referred accordingly.
Who should not have shoulder manipulation? Patients with suspected fracture, acute dislocation, severe joint instability, or inflammatory arthritis in a flare require a modified approach or referral. This is identified during the assessment — treatment only proceeds when it is appropriate and safe.
What if my shoulder pain is actually coming from my neck? Cervical referred pain into the shoulder is very common and frequently misdiagnosed. Dr. Brian screens the cervical spine at every shoulder assessment to identify or rule out a neck contribution — so the treatment addresses the actual source of your pain.

Your first appointment runs approximately 30 minutes. No GP referral needed. If you have recent ultrasound, MRI, or X-rays of the shoulder — bring them along. Helpful but not essential.
Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a chiropractor help with shoulder pain?+
Yes. Chiropractic care is effective for many common shoulder conditions including rotator cuff tendinopathy, impingement syndrome, AC joint pain, and shoulder pain that originates from the neck. An accurate diagnosis at the first visit determines whether chiropractic is appropriate, or whether referral for imaging or specialist review is the right first step.
How many sessions will I need for shoulder pain?+
Acute shoulder strains or mild impingement often respond in 4–8 visits. Chronic conditions, frozen shoulder, or tendinopathy with significant degeneration typically require a longer care plan. Dr. Brian will give you a specific, realistic timeframe after your first assessment.
What is shoulder impingement and can chiropractic fix it?+
Shoulder impingement occurs when the rotator cuff tendons are compressed in the subacromial space during arm elevation, causing a painful arc of movement. Chiropractic treatment addresses the mechanical contributors — including restricted thoracic mobility, poor scapular control, and AC joint dysfunction — that narrow the subacromial space. Combined with exercise rehabilitation, this approach produces good outcomes for most patients.
Can a chiropractor help frozen shoulder?+
Chiropractic care can help manage frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), particularly in the freezing and thawing stages. Joint mobilisation, soft tissue work, and guided movement therapy help maintain the available range, reduce pain, and support recovery. Frozen shoulder typically resolves over 12–24 months with or without treatment — but appropriate care significantly reduces pain and preserves function throughout that process.
Is my shoulder pain actually coming from my neck?+
Quite possibly. Cervical nerve roots from C4 to C6 refer pain into the shoulder region, and this is frequently mistaken for a local shoulder problem. Key clues include arm tingling, neck stiffness alongside shoulder pain, and pain that doesn’t improve with shoulder-only treatment. Dr. Brian assesses both the shoulder and cervical spine at every new shoulder presentation to identify where the pain is truly coming from.
Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor for shoulder pain?+
No referral is needed to book directly. If you are attending under a Medicare EPC plan, Workers’ Compensation (SIRA), CTP, or DVA, a referral will be required — call us and we’ll guide you through the process.
