Understanding Your Pain

What Is Back Pain?

Back pain is Australia’s single most common musculoskeletal condition — and one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. It affects people of all ages, from desk workers and tradies to parents and retirees, and ranges from a dull, persistent ache to a sharp, debilitating pain that stops you in your tracks.

The lumbar spine — the five vertebrae of your lower back — carries the majority of your body’s load through every movement you make. When the joints, discs, muscles, or nerves of this region are stressed, strained, or injured, the result is back pain. The cause matters enormously: a muscle strain, a disc bulge, and a facet joint problem each require a different treatment approach.

At Kings Park Chiropractic, Dr. Brian Sin (M.Chiro, Grad Dip Chiro, DACCP) performs a thorough spinal and neurological assessment to identify the exact source of your back pain before any treatment begins.

Symptoms

Do You Recognise These Signs?

Back pain presents differently depending on the underlying cause. Here are the most common symptoms we see and treat at Kings Park Chiropractic.

Lower back ache A persistent dull ache in the lumbar region, often worsening after prolonged sitting, standing, or bending
Morning stiffness Back feels rigid and locked on waking, taking 20–30 minutes to loosen up — a hallmark of joint and disc involvement
Pain bending forward Sharp or catching pain when bending to pick something up, often indicating disc or facet joint irritation
Leg pain or sciatica Pain, tingling, or numbness radiating from the lower back into the buttock or down one leg — indicating nerve involvement
Muscle spasm Sudden, involuntary tightening of the back muscles causing severe pain and restricted movement — often following a strain
Pain after sitting Stiffness and pain when standing up from a chair or car seat — particularly common in desk workers and drivers
⚠️ Seek urgent care if back pain is accompanied by loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, or severe progressive leg weakness — these may indicate cauda equina syndrome, a medical emergency.
Causes

What’s Causing Your Back Pain?

Back pain is rarely caused by a single factor. The lumbar spine is under constant load through every movement — work postures, old injuries, disc degeneration, and muscle imbalances all play a role. Identifying the exact cause is what determines the most effective treatment.

1
Lumbar Disc Bulge A bulging or herniated disc at L4–L5 or L5–S1 is one of the most common causes of lower back pain — and can compress nearby nerve roots, causing sciatica.
2
Facet Joint Irritation Stiff or inflamed joints between the vertebrae cause localised back pain, often with a catching or locking sensation — particularly when arching backward or rotating.
3
Muscle Strain Overloading or sudden movement of the back muscles and ligaments causes acute strain — the most common cause of sudden-onset lower back pain.
4
Poor Posture & Sedentary Work Prolonged sitting increases disc pressure in the lumbar spine significantly. Desk workers, drivers, and tradespeople are all at elevated risk from cumulative postural load.
5
Degenerative Disc Disease Age-related thinning of the lumbar discs reduces shock absorption and can narrow the foramina, placing chronic pressure on nearby nerve roots.
6
Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction Irritation or hypermobility of the sacroiliac joints — where the pelvis meets the spine — produces deep, one-sided lower back pain that is often mistaken for a disc problem.
7
Spondylolisthesis A vertebra that has slipped forward can cause chronic lower back pain, stiffness, and sciatic symptoms — particularly in active individuals and older adults.
8
Work & Sports Injury Manual handling injuries, heavy lifting, and repetitive bending or twisting at work or in sport are leading causes of acute and chronic lumbar spine injury in Australia.
Our Approach

How Chiropractic Helps Back Pain

Chiropractic care for back pain focuses on restoring normal movement to the lumbar joints, reducing pressure on discs and nerve roots, and releasing the muscle tension that drives chronic pain — treating the cause, not just the symptom.

1
Lumbar Spinal Adjustment Precise, targeted adjustments restore normal motion to stiff lumbar joints, reduce disc pressure, relieve nerve irritation, and allow the surrounding muscles to relax.
2
Cox Flexion-Distraction A gentle traction technique applied to the lumbar spine that decompresses the disc, reduces nerve root pressure, and is particularly effective for disc bulge and sciatica cases.
3
Dry Needling Targets trigger points in the lumbar paraspinal muscles, quadratus lumborum, and gluteals that drive chronic back pain and restrict movement.
4
Rehabilitation & Postural Correction Targeted strengthening exercises, ergonomic advice, and movement coaching to address the underlying postural and movement patterns driving your pain — and prevent it coming back.
A 2013 Cochrane Review on spinal manipulative therapy for low back pain found that chiropractic adjustment produced clinically significant improvements in pain and function compared to sham treatment. A 2017 JAMA Internal Medicine study found spinal manipulation produced greater reductions in acute low back pain than standard GP care at six weeks.

Safety & Evidence

Is Chiropractic Safe for Back Pain?

Chiropractic is one of the most widely researched and recommended conservative treatments for back pain. Australian and international clinical guidelines consistently support spinal manipulative therapy as a first-line treatment for non-specific low back pain — before medication or surgery.

At Kings Park Chiropractic, Dr. Brian Sin (M.Chiro, Grad Dip Chiro, DACCP) performs a full health history and physical assessment before any back pain treatment begins. Contraindications — including fractures, malignancy, infection, and cauda equina syndrome — are screened for systematically at every first visit. Dr. Brian is registered with AHPRA and holds a Master of Chiropractic from Macquarie University.

The technique, force, and direction of every adjustment is adapted to your individual presentation, age, and health history.

What does a lumbar adjustment involve? A lumbar adjustment is a precise, controlled movement applied to a specific joint in the lower back to restore normal motion. Most patients feel immediate relief and improved mobility. The audible “crack” is simply gas releasing from the joint — it is not bones grinding.
Who should not have a lumbar adjustment? Patients with suspected cauda equina syndrome, spinal fracture, active infection, bone cancer, or severe osteoporosis require a modified approach or referral. This is why the assessment always comes first — every single visit.
What if I prefer not to be adjusted? No problem. Cox flexion-distraction, dry needling, soft tissue therapy, and rehabilitation exercises are all effective alternatives for back pain. Just let us know your preference at your first visit and Dr. Brian will tailor the approach accordingly.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a chiropractor help with lower back pain?+
Yes — chiropractic is one of the most evidence-supported conservative treatments for lower back pain. Australian and international clinical guidelines recommend spinal manipulative therapy as a first-line option for non-specific low back pain. At Kings Park Chiropractic, Dr. Brian assesses the specific cause of your back pain first, then applies the most appropriate combination of adjustment, soft tissue therapy, dry needling, and rehabilitation.
How many sessions will I need for back pain?+
Acute back pain from a strain or minor joint irritation often responds well within 4–6 visits over 2–3 weeks. Disc-related back pain or chronic pain that has been present for months typically requires 8–12 visits over 4–8 weeks. Dr. Brian provides a realistic timeframe at your first visit — not an open-ended commitment.
Should I see a chiropractor or physio for back pain?+
Both professions effectively treat back pain. Chiropractors focus on diagnosing and treating spinal joint dysfunction — spinal adjustment is the primary tool. Physiotherapists emphasise exercise rehabilitation. For joint-related back pain with restricted movement or disc involvement, chiropractic often produces faster initial relief. Many patients benefit from both. Dr. Brian refers to physiotherapy when exercise-based rehabilitation is the priority.
Can chiropractic help a slipped or bulging disc?+
Yes, in most cases. Lumbar adjustment and Cox flexion-distraction are well-supported treatments for disc bulge causing back pain and sciatica. The goal is to reduce disc pressure on the nerve root, restore normal joint movement, and relieve the associated muscle tension. Severe disc herniations with progressive neurological deficit — such as worsening foot drop — require imaging and may need specialist referral.
Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor for back pain?+
No referral is needed to book directly. If you are attending under a Medicare EPC plan, Workers’ Compensation (SIRA), CTP, or DVA, a referral will be required — call us and we’ll guide you through the process.
Is back pain normal? Should I just rest and wait?+
Back pain is extremely common but not something you should simply push through or wait out. Research consistently shows that early, active treatment produces significantly better outcomes than bed rest or inactivity. The longer back pain is left untreated, the higher the risk it becomes chronic — with AIHW data showing back problems are the third leading cause of disease burden in Australia. If your pain has lasted more than a few days or is recurring, a proper assessment is worthwhile.
